FULLERTON, Calif. - The Royals took on the Lions for the second time this season, and the first time in Darling Pavilion. The Royals won the first set but fell in three straight sets after losing 3-1. The Royals move to 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
HIU produced an impressive hitting percentage of .407 in the first set while holding the Lions to their lowest hitting percentage of the night (.353). With the game tied at 20-20, the Royals benefited from two Lion errors to take a two-point advantage. Chase Larson (SR/Henderson, NV) slammed a kill down on an assist from Brandon Holderbach Lee (SR/Lancaster, CA) to put the Royals at match point. The Lions got the next point but the Royals ended the first set on another kill from Larson to take set one 23-25.
The Royals allowed the Lions to get an early 7-4 advantage in the second set after a few attacking errors. The Lions were up 21-12 and the Royals battled back with four straight points with help from two kills from Isaac Liva (JR/Miliani, HI), one kill from Joshua Nehls (SR/Downey, CA), and a Lion error to cut their deficit. HIU's late energy in set two was not enough as Vanguard took set two 25-22.
Once again the Lions took an early 6-2 advantage but the Royals tied things up at 11-11 on a kill from Liva. The Royals continued to battle but could not match the Lion's offense and fell 25-20 in set three.
In set four the Royals recorded their lowest hitting percentage of the match, while the Lions recorded their highest. The Lions would end up taking set four 25-14 to end the match.
The Royals will face Vanguard again on the road on February 24th at 7:00PM.
