FULLERTON, Calif. - The Royals played the Lions for the fourth time this season Wednesday night in Darling Pavilion. HIU was coming off an upset verse the Lions from last week and the Lions came out firing on all cylinders in tonight's match and defeated the Royals in three sets.
The Royals allowed the Lions to get ahead early in set one as they went up 9-5. After an error from the Lions, HIU was only down by three but Vanguard strung together four straight points to go up 13-6. Vanguard controlled the rest of the set from this point and the Royals would drop set one 25-16.
In set two, the Royals tied things up at 6-6 due to a Vanguard error and took the lead for the first time in the match on another Lion error. Once again, HIU allowed the Lions to string together some points and regain the momentum to take the second set 25-19.
The third set began close as the two teams exchanged point for point, but the Lions eventually took a nine-point advantage over the Royals and would take the set 25-15.
HIU's hitting percentage was .167 on the night, while Vanguard posted a .529 hitting percentage. Joshua Nehls (SR/Downey, CA) had nine kills in the match, while Chase Larson (SR/Henderson, NV) had four kills.
The Royals will face the Lions again on Wednesday, February 10th in Costa Mesa.
